CUT UPS: Persephone Down Deep
55 x 73 in. / collage / 2023
Collage using cuttings from handmade pulp painted paper, salvaged from earlier work, on a base of Khadi paper.
For decades I have been playing with images from Antiquity seeking ways that bring them into a present focus;
I take old forms and place them, or their fragments, withing a new context, purposing materials from discarded artworks or simply reusing the trimmings left over in the fabrication of an artists book. The borrowings or Spolia* from earlier work, a shift in form that has at its origin, honoring works of art that many consider timeless, in order to make something new.
*SPOLIA: Latin: ‘spoils’ repurposed building stone used for new construction, or decorative sculpture reused in new monuments. Discards. Trash. Detritus. The spoils of war.
