Intimacy: Drawing with Light, Drawn from Stone
During a residency at Museo della Carta e della Filigrana in Fabriano, Italy in 2015 I made this suite of ivory toned paper, with watermarks based upon my sketches from Roman sculpture.
The suite of watermarked papers, “Drawing with Light”, is introduced by a title page, an epigraph, and a description of the watermark as drawing with light. The remaining 9 sheets are embellished with phrases derived from my prose poem, Marmo, in Italian, phrase-fragments in English. Each sheet is further embellished on the verso with graphite or watercolor. The suite rests between a tri-part plexiglass viewing easel, that opens out to view one sheet at a time, preferably backlit by sunlight. Marmo (Marble)
is an accordion fold book, an original text about the livingness of marble, in English and Italian. Schizzi (Sketches) holds a portfolio of 14 prints from the Rome Sketches series of ink drawings. All text printed letterpress in Centaur by John Balkwill, Lumino Press.
A hand-carved marble relief sculpture of an open blank book is affixed to the lid of a smoke grey anodized aluminum box, that contains everything. Edition limited to 20 copies.
